completely incomplete.

I went ahead and installed the Gutsy Gibbon Beta tonight. So far, so good. Upgrade info can be found here and release info here.

Initial thoughts:

  • The Compiz Fusion stuff is pretty cool. To minimize system resource drain, I’m not using all the fanciness that it has to offer. The new alt + tab interface is nice, though.
  • Gnome gets updated to 2.20. Whatever version of Gnome I was running before had this annoying problem where the items in the toolbar (panel) at the bottom would resize based on the title of the application. So, if you were looking at a webpage that had a crazy long title, the Firefox button would take up a large portion of the bar. That is fixed in 2.20.
  • NTFS writing is available with the help of the NTFS-3G project. This is pretty huge if you have a bunch of old Windows partitions lying around. I already had this setup on Feisty, but still, nice addition.

The upgrade was cake. Not only do I have a fresh OS, but a lot of other apps were updated too. Nice.

Hopefully, things will continue to go well and I’ll coast into the final release, which is due in October.

Broccoflower

I love broccoli and I like cauliflower, so I figured that I’d at least really like broccoflower. Because (love + like)/2 = really like. Mathy.

Anyway, I was wandering around the produce section and thought I’d like to try something new. Broccoflower it was. I wasn’t really sure how to prepare it, but figured the Internet would contain the recipes needed to save the day. And it did. The most delicious sounding one was curry roasted broccoflower, so it won. I think I used a little too much lemon juice, but it was still really good. To me, the broccoflower tasted and had the texture of cauliflower more than broccoli.

Lori added some curry chicken with rice and we had a meal full of goodness. We’re really kicking ass in the kitchen. It’s fun.

Tonight is grilled grouper with green beans and maybe a salad.

Electronical Woes

My Kenwood VR-6060 home theater receiver has been a champ for the nearly 4.5 years that I’ve owned it. Since the Kenwood website sucks, I’m not linking to it.

Anyway, the other day we went to watch a DVD and there was no sound. After some cable checking I found that the coaxial digital input that I had the DVD player connected to went bad. The receiver also has Toslink (optical) digital inputs, but the DVD player does not support this. I was sad.

I quickly came up with three solutions.

  1. Buy a new receiver (expensive).
  2. Buy a new DVD player that has Toslink output (less expensive, but dumb because the DVD player works fine).
  3. Check to see if there is such a thing as a coaxial to Toslink converter contraption and then find it for cheap on the Internet and then buy it (magical).

Thankfully, #3 is a reality. I received it yesterday in the mail and hooked it up and all is well again. Living without a DVD player was difficult.

Since I haven’t posted in awhile, I thought I’d do a quick update and recommend some new music for my reader(s).

If you haven’t heard of Chasing Donovan yet, then you really are missing out. It’s a little bit of a departure from what I normally listen to, but I can’t wait for him to come in concert. I know I’ll be first in line for tickets to what is sure to be an amazing show.

Enjoy some embedded NSFW goodness of the soon-to-be hit track, Sometimes.
