It seems I never know that Five Eight is playing until right before they actually play. Last time, I just happened to be at Smith’s the night they played. This time, I was at work (on a Saturday) and went to check out their site to see when their next show in Atlanta was to find that they were playing that very night, again at Smith’s.

Since I didn’t actually decide to go until last minute, I couldn’t find anyone that was able or unsick enough to join me. But, I knew that co-worker John was going to be there. I also knew that there was a good chance that my friend from high school/college, Wes, would be there. And then, there was the outside chance that hollismb would be there. And they all were. Five Eight really brings the people together.

The opening bands were both enjoyable. Mary O. Harrison opened, and while not exactly my style of music, she and her band put on a great performance. Next up was Morning State. I was not familiar with this band either, but they were pretty rocking and seemed to be having fun on stage and with the crowd.

And finally, Five Eight. As everyone already knows, they’re the best live band ever and they continued that trend last night. I was unfamiliar with a lot of the songs they played, which means either they played new stuff or just things off albums of theirs that I don’t own. Either way, I feel that I’ve let them down, but iTunes will help me to resolve this. I’m convinced that Mike Rizzi is a fantastic drummer. That being said, I don’t really know anything about drumming or what makes a drummer fantastic, but he definitely drums loud and I like that.

All in all, good night at Smith’s. Got to hang with some people I’ve never hung with outside of work or haven’t seen in awhile and was able to enjoy some great live music.
