Yesterday Mike, Doc and I took a road trip to Augusta, GA for the Southern Fried Flicks Film Festival to see Geekin’. This is the 2nd year for the festival which is held at the Imperial Theatre. You will remember Geekin’ as the independent movie that my friend Louis has a staring role in.
Some minor spoilers may occur below.
First, I should say that the acting was pretty good all around. My opinion might be slightly skewed here, but Louis did an excellent job playing the quick tempered Mooney. His performance seemed very natural, almost like this is how he is in real life. Weird. Another standout performance was given by Sean Mulhall in the role of Austin. His character and Louis’ are the best of friends but have a falling out which leads to some funny dialog and confrontations. Finally, I thought Jason Von Stein gave a great performance as Wes. He’s sort of the outcast in the group of outcasts. The guy that gets a bunch of shit from the others, which may or may not be deserved at times. His facial expressions and reactions to situations were timed perfectly which provided some subtle humor. I was also surprised to find that Doc had a small role in the film. He played the part of a barbarian named Killian Bloodaxe. He was a very believable barbarian.
Since I like to complain, I felt I should mention a few things here. I thought the movie, which the festival program had listed at 2 hours and 3 minutes, was a little long. Maybe it could have been trimmed some. Another thing I noticed was that the night scenes were pretty dark and a little difficult to see. This could very easily have been the fault of the projector, though. From where I was sitting, it looked like the kind you would see in an office conference room or home theater.
As a whole, I thought the movie was very good. It was funny and well performed. The video quality had a professional look to it and the guys at Digitribe Productions definitely put together a fun, quality production.
We were also able to catch a few short films before Geekin’ started, which was a nice bonus. The one that stood out as my favorite was a 10 minute student film written and directed by Drew Lindo entitled Losing Toby. Toby is a virtual pet of sorts that a lonely guy named Steven downloads and installs on his computer. Steven quickly finds that Toby is more than a pet and they become very close friends. Very close. But, when Steven finds Toby installed on a coworker’s computer, he can’t help but feel jealous and angry at Toby’s betrayal. The scene where Steven uninstalls Toby is hilarious. Good job all around on this one.
Thanks for the updates. Almost makes it sound like I know what I’m talking about.
What do you think the chances are that this will someday be released on DVD? I would own it and want your autograph on the case.
Long way to go for a movie, but at least it was fun!
I have been assured that it will one day be on DVD, even if the producer has to distribute it himself.
IMDB now has a listing for Geekin’. However the crew and cast are not entered and linked yet.
Sweet. Again, thanks for the updates, yo.
Hey there. My name is Andrew and I was the screenwriter on “Geekin’”. Everything you’re hearing is correct. The final cut of the film will be something like 10 minutes shorter than the version you saw. As for the darkness of it, we’ve never had that problem screening it anywhere until that day. So we don’t know what the problem is exactly, but we’re at least mostly sure it was on the theatre’s end. We’ll check into that to be sure.
As for DVD release, it will happen. Nothing specific yet, but there will be more info on the website later. Thanks for making the trek out to see it.
Hey Andrew, thanks for stopping by with the update. I look forward to seeing the final cut either on the big screen again or in my DVD collection.
So glad to hear you enjoyed my short, Losing Toby. We actually just won the student competition for Best Comedy at the Smogdance Film Festival in Pomona, California. So, an award, and a random positive review in the span of one week is pretty damn cool.
Thanks for the review, and the link to my site. Feel free to check out my other stuff as well. You might enjoy Gangster Movie.

Drew, congratulations on the win at the festival in CA! Toby is definitely deserving. I’ve watched a few of your other films with my favorites being Cape Chaser and Pink Slip, after Toby of course.
And, thanks for the link back here. It’s pretty cool to be featured on your journal page. Good luck with your future films.
Since there hasn’t been an update here in a while, I thought I would inform you that the Geekin’ DVD will be released on 8/22/2006 and is available for pre-order right now at http://www.geekinmovie.com.
Thanks for your support!
Awesome. Thanks for the update.

you might be pleased to know – there have been a few min shaved off the film. I am told they were the “sucky min”.
Also, I was told that it was unusually dark on the screen you saw it on. I have a feeling that will be changed for the next cut of the film.
Glad you had fun.
