Last year around this time I posted my all time top 10 horror and suspense movies. Looking back, I don’t think anything would change on this list in the year since. There have been some pretty good movies since, just not top 10 worthy.
My favorite horror of the past year was Saw. It got some shit from the Internet for poor acting and lacking in originality, but that’s all crap. Its a horror movie, bad acting is allowable and sometimes welcome. As for its originality, sure it has a Se7en feel to it, but that doesn’t bother me at all. The ending was great and I expect to be saying similar comments next year for Saw II, due October 28.
Another of note from the past year was The Skeleton Key. Its more thriller/suspense than horror, but it was fun nonetheless. Again, a good ending and a little Kate Hudson side boob, if I remember correctly. Mmmmm, side boob.
But, the real reason why I thought to post this is that Bloody-Disgusting is reporting that Lions Gate has set a release date of January 6, 2006 for Eli Roth’s next flick, Hostel. You will remember Mr. Roth as writer/director of #7 on my all time top 10 horror and suspense movies list, Cabin Fever. I’ve been waiting to see what Roth has in store for us horror fans, and it looks pretty good. From what I’m reading, we can expect a gore fest.
I sure did. Jigsaw makes a pretty interesting evil guy and it had a “holy shit!” ending.
But, then again, my taste in movies might be a little odd, as I also liked The Matrix. ;)
I’ve avoided Saw for all of the reasons that others have avoided it, but I have to side with you on Cabin Fever for one very important reason: pancakes.
That’s hilarious. Nice one Scott.
I just rewatched Saw and I stand by my comments, it’s a good movie. Thank you.
Saw really scared the crap out of me; but I was never allowed to watch scary movies as a child, so they pretty much reek havoc on me now! Even so, I am having my annual fright fest (where I rent tons of scary movies around Halloween), and so far, on the list is The Grudge, Amityville Horror (2005), 28 Days later, Dawn of the Dead (I actually own this one), Undead, Land of the Dead, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the new one). So far, I have seen the first two, and it is already getting hard to sleep at night… Happy Halloween!
I haven’t seen the new Amityville Horror yet, but I hear good things about it. 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead, and the new TCM are all excellent.
I have to say that I was pretty disappointed with Undead, though. The trailer reminded me of a favorite from growing up, Night of the Comet, but was nothing like it.
Bobafred, you may want to read my review on my site about Amityville. Unless you have a crush on Ryan Reynolds (and I am guessing you probably don’t), then you may want to steer clear, as his being shirtless a lot is one of the only redeeming qualities of the movie. And that is sad. I wasn’t even scared, and I am VERY easily scared.
